Sen. Rand Paul Accuses Dick Cheney of Starting Iraq War for Profit

Opposing Viewpoints Reports: Video from April, 2009 reveals critical remarks on Cheney and the Iraq War

Comments state that the Iraq War was caused to benefit Cheney’s former employer Halliburton

On April 7, 2009, before Paul announced his senatorial bid, he quoted President Dwight Eisenhower’s cautionary speech on corporations. “Beware of the military industrial complex,” Paul paraphrased Eisenhower [6:23 mark]. “We need to be fearful of companies that get so big that they can actually be directing policy. When the Iraq war started Halliburton got a billion-dollar no-bid contract. Some of the stuff has been so shoddy and so sloppy that our soldiers are over their dying in the shower from electrocution.”

Paul said Cheney had a long excuse for why former President George H.W. Bush shouldn’t invade Iraq in 1995. He recalled Cheney saying, “it would be a disaster, it would be vastly expensive, it’d be civil war, we would have no exit strategy.” “Dick Cheney then goes to work for Halliburton,” Paul said. “Makes hundreds of millions of dollars, their CEO. Next thing you know, he’s back in government and it’s a good idea to go into Iraq.” “It became an excuse, 9/11 became an exuse for a war that they already wanted in Iraq,” he added.
